About this place
At Shigekuniya 55 Bakery, part of the fun is choosing between bagels described as “mucchiri” and “mocchiri”—two different kinds of chew. Visitors say the mucchiri style is denser and more substantial, while the mocchiri one is lighter. Choose the former when you want a bagel to really sink your teeth into, or the latter for a gentler bite.
For a pairing of flavours, try the Earl Grey and white chocolate bagel. Those who have tasted it describe the tea’s aroma building as they chew, alongside the sweetness of the white chocolate: a chance to enjoy the bagel’s springy texture and sweetness together. Another combination, pumpkin and cream cheese, has been praised for bringing together the pumpkin’s mellow sweetness and the cream cheese’s richness. There is room to choose between a sweet bagel and one where the filling takes centre stage.
There is more to explore beyond bagels, including croissants and savoury breads. Visitors have praised the croissant’s lightly crisp exterior, its pleasantly moist interior and its toasty wheat aroma, which they found especially pronounced after warming it. For something more substantial, there is also a ham and red cheddar cheese panini. One diner reported that the texture of onion joined the ham and cheese, making for a filling bite in which the ingredients came together with the bread.
The bakery also offers inventive breads, including an apple-ginger bagel made with apple and ginger. With sweet and savoury breads as well, you can come for a bagel and add something different to take away. Shopping in person and takeaway are available; payment is cash only. The bakery opens from 10 to 17 on Wednesday through Sunday and is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
